Research Skills Workshop Minor updates July 2008, Sept 2012, March 2015 Thesis Write it as paper(s) for a journal, if your institution allows it. Put extra material into appendices. If necessary, expand the paper(s) into traditional thesis chapters. Supervisors: give feedback by reading the manuscript word-by-word with the student in person, by phone, or on skype. It’s much more enjoyable than correcting the manuscript alone. You are less likely to delay the student. Send the student away to rewrite some sections. But it’s OK to dictate corrections sometimes. And it’s OK to have major input into Results sections. Students: give everything your best shot. Supervisors LOVE students who write well and know the literature. Journal Article General Choose a journal with the right focus and impact factor. Aim high, but be prepared for rejection. Format headings, tables, figures, and references in the style of the journal. Send the tracked-changes Word doc around the authors. But go through some sections with some authors in person. Ideally get feedback from a colleague or expert before submitting it. But it’s a big ask. Don’t expect detailed, high-quality feedback. The following guidelines are mainly for articles based on quantitative methods. Title Write it first. Try to state the finding in the title. Dont make it too specific, or people might not read or cite it. Authors Agree about authorship issues early on in the project.
