The propagation delay, or the time required by the electrical signals to travel from one end of the cabling link to the other end, is half of the round trip propagation delay measured during the length test. Most network standards define a maximum propagation delay between stations in a local area network. If the length of the horizontal link adheres to the 100m limit, one such link will not exceed the propagation delay if proper data cabling is used (NVP greater than 61%). A characteristic that is gaining more attention is the difference between the propagation delay for each of the wire pairs. This measurement is called delay skew. Some of the high speed network systems achieve very high data rates by concurrently transmitting data on several, or on all, of the wire pairs of a four pair cabling link. The stream of bits is “broken up” by the transmitter and each portion is simultaneously sent over a different wire pair. It is obvious that the data streams need to be reassembled properly by the receiver to reconstruct the original message. One of the requirements to make this task possible is that the time relationship must be maintained from one end of the link to the other. Bits must travel at approximately the same speed to be received in the order in which they were sent. Delay skew measures this property. * * * * Delay skew was originally added to several testing standards because some Category 5 cables were constructed with different insulating materials around the copper conductors. This construction is referred to as heterogeneous. Homogeneous cable construction requires that all wire pairs are con
