With a prominent great-grandfather, Colonel William Falkner Williams Great-grandfather Faulkner came from an old, proud and distinguished Mississippi Family, which included a governor, a colonel in the Confederate Army, and notable bussiness pioneers. His great-grandfather, Colonel William Clark Falkner, appears as Colonel John Sartoris in Faulkners fiction, had a distinguished career as a soldier, both in the Mexican War and the American Civil War. Life He showed little interest in study and dropped out from his high school. Then he worked in a bank. Effected by his mother, when he was 10, he became a fan of Shakespeare, Fielding, Voltaire, Hugo and other eminent authors.
