Frederick I Frederick William I Peter the Great Catherine II The Nazi German Frederick William I (1688-1740), king of Prussia (1713-1740), his greatest accomplishment was in the internal development of Prussia. Prussia began as the German district of Brandenburg. It became the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701 Peter the Great or Peter I (1672-1725), emperor of Russia (1682-1725), who brought Western culture to Russia, built roads and canals, modernized the army and navy, and secured seaports for trade. Catherine the Great (1729-1796), empress of Russia, expanded her vast country’s borders south to the Black Sea and west into Europe while continuing the Westernization begun by Peter the Great.
