Although recycling is significant for the environment, residents
in York pay less attention to it because lack
of awareness and facilities.
Introduction
In recent years, the environment plays an increasing significant role all over the world. Recycling, as one of the most probably assessable ways to improve the environment, has been experimented in York. Although residents may know the importance of recycling, a lack of awareness could lead residents forget to recycle. Meanwhile, the recycling actions are possibly limited because of the insufficiency of facilities. Both the awareness and facilities seem to be the main factors to achieve the expectation of the locals about recycling. Therefore, this research was motivated by the need to find effective solutions to enhance the facilities and improve the awareness of citizens. Based on the data from a questionnaire, this report states the potential recycling problems which probably exist in York, and then focus on the solutions to tackle the problems mentioned above.
Method
Preparing work
An article named Rubbish, Waste and Recycling on the website of York Council (2009) helped the researchers to acquire an amount of information. Initially, York Household Waste Recycling Centre Permit Scheme (HWRC) was realized. In the second place, the researchers also learnt about the types of facilities for recycling in York as well as the concept Zero Waste York (ZWY) put forward by the local council. The research was done by interviewing twenty local residents selected at random in the city centre to answer a questionnaire on Sunday 14 August.
