The use of automatic pressure altitude reporting equipment (Mode C) enables controllers to quickly determine where potential conflicts could occur. The results are a higher degree of safety, reduced communications, and more efficient service. 9/3/2021 Paul Robichaud 4 TRANSPONDERS 9/3/2021 Paul Robichaud 5 OPERATION The transponder itself usually comprises of a function switch that has 5 positions: “Off”, “Standby”, “On”, “Alt”, “Test”. An Interrogation light. An “Ident” button. Capability to select four separate digits, which range from 0 - 7, giving the transponder a 4096 code capability. 9/3/2021 Paul Robichaud 6 OPERATION Transponders should be adjusted to “Standby” while taxiing for T/O, to “ON” when entering the active runway. Then to “Standby” or “Off” as soon as practicable after landing (upon leaving the active runway). Use of the “IDENT” feature is only when directed by ATC. 9/3/2021 Paul Robichaud 7 TRANSPONDER REQUIREMENTS CAR 601.03 requires A/C to be equipped with a functioning transponder with Mode C in all class A/B/C airspace. Plus in class D E airspace which has been designated as “Transponder airspace”. For example; the class D airspace in Halifax, and class E airspace surrounding Moncton. 9/3/2021 Paul Robichaud 8 TRANSPONDER AIRSPACE 9/3/2021 Paul Robichaud 9 MODE A C When the transponder is selected “On” with an assigned code, this will result in the transponder replying to radar interrogation in Mode A. With the transponder selected to “Alt” (Altitude), this will also result in the transponder replying to radar interrogation, plus providing A/C altitude information. 9/3/
