Introduction The criminal responsibility age is the age at which an individual can be held accountable for their actions and can, therefore, be sentenced to prison or other criminal punishments for their crimes. In most countries, this age is typically set between the ages of 14 and 18 years old. This debate is not only happening in one country but is a global issue. Nevertheless, this paper will focus on China as an example. Presently, Chinas Criminal Law prescribes that the age of criminal responsibility is 14, and it is the same as that of some developed countries in the world. However, some experts have argued that the age is too high, given that children under 14 years of age may be capable of committing serious crimes. As such, the Chinese government has been evaluating the possibility of lowering the minimum criminal responsibility age to a younger age. Arguments for a Lower Criminal Responsibility Age Those in favor of a lower criminal responsibility age often argue that the current age of criminal responsibility does not reflect the childs ability to understand the consequences of their actions.
