Sometimes she sold me an old newspaper instead of the latest one. Sometimes she overcharged me and didn’t seem embarrassed when I pointed it out. Going to the store was like going into battle, but I survived. By summer’s end the shopping trip that had once taken me an hour was done in 15 minutes.
