Unit Nine Listening scripts: Fujian Province is located on the southeast coast of China, facing the island province of Taiwan across Taiwan Strait to the east. It occupies an area of around 124 000 square kilometers with a population of 36 894 216 in 2010. Fujian is also a major hometown of overseas Chinese. All over the world, there are about 8 million overseas Chinese of Fujian origin and 80 percent of Taiwan’s population is of Fujian origin. Fujian has a sub-tropical climate, warm and humid, with no distinctive difference between seasons. Mountains and hills make up the vast majority of Fujian’s territory, while only narrow strips of the east seaside are plains. The Wuyi Mountain divides Jiangxi Province from Fujian Province. The MinJiang River and its tributaries cut through much of northern and central Fujian. Fujian province is a unique tourist attraction. It is rich in tourism resources, abounding with numerous places of historical and cultural interest. The tourist attractions include the Yongquan Temple in the city of Fuzhou, Zhangzhou’s Nanshan Temple, Meizhou Island, the Kaiyuan Temple of Quanzhou, the Gulangyu Island in Xiamen which is known as Garden on the Sea with a Mediterranean flavor combining sea breezes, sunshine and exotic architecture, and the only UNESCO World Heritage Sites Mount Wuyi in Fujian Province.
