从切斯特曼翻译伦理模式析辜正坤《道德经》的英译的中期报告 Dear Professor, I am writing to provide a mid-term report on my analysis of Gu Zhengkuns English translation of the Dao De Jing, using Chestermans model of ethical translation as a framework. Chestermans model argues that translation is an essentially ethical activity, and that ethical considerations must be taken into account by translators. He identifies three main ethical models for translation: the authorial model, the target reader model, and the public service model. Each of these models prioritises different ethical considerations and results in different strategies for translation. In my analysis of Gus translation of the Dao De Jing, I have focussed primarily on his use of the authorial model. This model centres on the original author and seeks to represent their intended meaning as accurately as possible. Key ethical considerations for this model include faithfulness to the text, transparency to the reader, and respect for the authors stylistic choices and linguistic features. One key strength of Gus translation is his commitment to transparency. He includes explanatory notes and comments throughout the translation, which provide valuable context and help the reader to understand the nuances of the original text. He also ensures that his translation is faithful to the text, frequently using lexical and grammatical structures that mimic the original Chinese. However, one weakness of Gus authorial approach is that it sometimes prioritises accuracy over readability. The English in his translation can be stilted and awkward, and the many notes and comments can be overwhelming. There is a risk that readers may find the translation laborious or inaccessible, which could limit its appeal and impact. In future, I plan to explore Gus use of the target reader and public service models, as well as his approach to ethical dilemmas such as how to handle culturally-specific concepts and how to balance the demands of different audiences.
