worstyearsince2008,bondsdeliveredtheir
worstlossesever,inflationhita40-yearhigh,
andcentralbanksimplementedthelargestinterest
ratehikesinover40years,investorsaroundthe
globeremainremarkablypositivein2023.
Resultsfromthe2023NatixisGlobalSurveyofIndividualInvestorsfindthat68%ofthe
8,550peoplein23countriessurveyedshareapositiveoutlookonthestateoftheirfinances
today,as30%saythey’reconfident,24%sayprepared,andanother15%feelfortunate.
Mostsurprisingisthatgiventherealityoflastyear’slosses,lingeringinflation,andrumblings
aboutrecession,onlyone-thirdofthosesurveyedhaveanegativeoutlookontheirfinances:
only22%findthemselvesstressed,7%saythey’redepressed,and3%feellikethey’vefailed.
Basedonthefears,misconceptions,andmiscalculationsthatinvestorsexpressedin
theirsurveyresponses,itseemsthatmanymoreinvestorsshouldbefeelinguneasyor
stressedin2023.Stressedbecausetoday’smacroandmarketscenarioismuchdifferent
fromtheonethatdrovedouble-digitreturnssincetheGlobalFinancialCrisis.

Thepositivevibesmaylastonlysolongastheeconomyof16.5%annually1.Anditranupbigreturnswithlower
andthemarketsareundergoingshiftsthatcouldtriggervolatilityuntiltheglobalpandemicstruckin2020.Inthe
investors’biggestfearsandshedlightoncriticalgapsinaftermath,investorshaveyettomakeameaningfulad-
theirinvestmentknowledge.It’sacombustiblecombinationjustmenttotheirreturnassumptionsandreassesswhere
