Abstract
TheinterchangeofI-79withthePenn-LincolnParkway,westofPittsburgh,PA,wasconstructedinthelate1960’s.AbandonedandfloodedundergroundmineworkingsinthePittsburghCoalwereencounteredunexpectedlyatcutslopelocationsontwodifferentramps.Attheselocations,waterdrainedfreelyuntilc
Theexistingminetreatmentalongtherampsconsistsofsealsconstructedofrandomembankmentmaterial,notchedintotheproposedcutslope,withdrainagepipealongthefaceofthecoal.Minewaterfromthispipedischargesintotheexistingroadwaydrainagesystem,whichnowshowstheimpactofthisaciddrainage.Thesealshavenoapparentstabilityproblems.However,thereapparentlyareleaksintheexistingmineseals,contributingtowetareas.
Finaldesignforreconstructionandimprovementoftheinterchangehasjustbeencompleted.Sincetheexistingminesealsareapparentlyfunctioning,thebasicgeometrywasmaintainedfortheproposeddesign.Minepoolvolumeandrechargeestimatesweredeveloped.Minormodificationstotheolddesignsweremadetoimproveefficiency,tightenthespecifications,andusemodernmaterials.
However,becauseofcurrentenvironmentalregulations,minewaterencounteredduringnewconstructionmustbecollectedandtreatedpriortodischarge.Inaddition,rockfromprojectexcavationwiththepotentialforproducingacidrunoffalsonowrequiresspecialhandling.Soil,rockandwaterqualitytestingwasperformed,andtheirqualitycharacterized.A“CoalImpactsReport”waspreparedfortheprojecttodocumentthiswork.
