    Casing

    Awellisalwayscased(setpipe)tocompletethewell.Casingisrelatively

    thin-walled,steelpipe.Numerousjointsofthesamesizecasingarescrewed

    togethertoformalonglengthofcasing,calledacasingstring.Thecasinghas

    anouterdiameterofatleast2in.(5cm)lessthewellborediameter.The

    casingstringisrunintothewellandcementedtothesidesofthewell

    (Fig.I–9)inacementjob.

    Casingstabilizesthewellandpreventsthesidesfromcavingintothe

    well.Itprotectsfreshwaterreservoirsfromtheoil,gas,andsaltwater

    broughtupthewellduringproduction.Casingalsopreventstheproduction

    frombeingdilutedbywatersfromotherformationsinthewell.

    CasingisseamlesspipemadetoAPIstandards.Itrangesinlengthsfrom
