38.3Lithiummetalandlithiumionbatteries
38.3.1Purpose
Thissectionpresentstheprocedurestobefollowedfortheclassificationoflithiummetaland
lithiumioncellsandbatteries(seeUNNos.3090,3091,3480and3481,andtheapplicablespecialprovisions
ofChapter3.3oftheModelRegulations).
38.3.2Scope
38.3.2.1AllcelltypesshallbesubjectedtotestsT.1toT.6andT.8.Allnon-rechargeablebatterytypes,
includingthosecomposedofpreviouslytestedcells,shallbesubjectedtotestsT.1toT.5.Allrechargeable
batterytypes,includingthosecomposedofpreviouslytestedcells,shallbesubjectedtotestsT.1toT.5and
T.7.Inaddition,rechargeablesinglecellbatterieswithoverchargeprotectionshallbesubjectedtotestT.7.
Acomponentcellthatisnottransportedseparatelyfromthebatteryitispartofneedsonlytobetested
accordingtotestsT.6andT.8.Acomponentcellthatistransportedseparatelyfromthebatteryshallbe
subjectedtotestsT.1toT.6andT.8.Acellorbatterythatisanintegralpartoftheequipmentitisintendedto
powerthatistransportedonlywheninstalledintheequipment,maybetestedinaccordancewiththeapplicable
testswheninstalledintheequipment.
38.3.2.2Lithiummetalandlithiumioncellsandbatteriesshallbesubjectedtothetests,asrequiredby
specialprovisions188and230ofChapter3.3oftheModelRegulationspriortothetransportofaparticular
cellorbatterytype.Cellsorbatterieswhichdifferfromatestedtypeby:
(a)Forprimarycellsandbatteries,achangeofmorethan0.1gor20%bymass,whichever
isgreater,tothecathode,totheanode,or
