ItismyhonortorecommendDr.ChengLiutoyourJSPSpostdoctoralprogramofyourlab.Ashissupervisor,IhaveknownDr.Liufor6yearssincehejoinedinmylaboratoryforgraduatestudyatUniversityofElectronicScienceandTechnologyofChinasince2004.IamoftenawareofDr.Liusbrightnessanddiligence,andheisoneofthetopstudentsinmylab.Iamsurehisenthusiasmforbasicandappliedbiologicalresearchisalwaysadrivingforce.Hewoulddoagreatjobinyourlabunderyoursupervisionbecauseofhisgreattalentandnicepersonalities.
Whenhewasafreshmaninmylaboratory,Iwassoimpressedbyhispotentialtolearnanytechniques.Hespentafewmonthstotaketrainingwithplatformtechniquesincludingmolecularcloning,C-banding,insituhybridization,AFLPandsoforth.Dr.LiuhasnotonlyisolatedseveralgenomicrepetitivesequencesfromSecaleandDasypyrumspecies,andlocalizedthemonthechromosomesbyFISH,butalsoindependentlyidentifiedfournewwheat-Dasypyrumbreviaristatumadditionlineswithmulti-diseaseresistancebymolecularandcytogeneticmethods.
SinceDr.Liudidexcellentjobsinacademicfieldandclasses,hewaschosentoattendthePh.DjointprogramwithDr.BerndFriebeatKansasStateUniversityfortwoyears,whichsupportedbyChineseScholarshipCouncil(CSC).HefurtherrevealedtheevolutionaryrelationshipbetweenthethreespeciesofDasypyrum,andsuccessfullyidentifiedasetofwheat-DasypyrumvillosumRoberstanian-translocationlinesusingSTS-basedPCRmarkersandGISH.
Asfirstandco-firstauthor,hepublishedseveralpaperstotheinternationalpeer-reviewedjournalsofcropgeneticsandbreeding.HegothighscoresinhisPh.DdefenseinDecember2010,andawardedexcellentgraduatestudentsinourdepartment.
