白鲟作为中国国家一级保护野生动物，是古老珍稀鱼类，有“水中大熊猫”之称，具有
非常高的科研、药用和观赏价值。但由于环境污染和过度捕捞，它们的数量急剧下降。2020
年1月白鲟被宣布灭绝。

TheChinesepaddlefishlivingintheYangtzeRiverwasdeclaredextinct,accordingtoapaper
fromChineseexpertsattheYangtzeRiverFisheriesResearchInstitute.
WeiQiwei,anauthorofthepaper,saidthatinSeptemberlastyear,expertsfromthe
InternationalUnionforConservationofNatureestimatedthatthisuniqueandfirst-classprotected
fishhadbeenextinctalready.
Thefishhasnotbeenseeninthewildsince2003,nordoartificiallybred(人工繁殖的)
individualsexist,saidWeiataforumontheprotectionofbiologicalresourcesintheYangtzeheld
inWuhan,HubeiProvince.
TheChinesepaddlefishisoneoftheworldslargestfreshwaterfishes,whichcangrowup
to7metreslong.Itisanendemic(地方性的)speciesinChinaunderfirst-levelnational
protection.
TheancestorsoftheChinesepaddlefishdatebacktotheCretaceousperiodmorethan
100millionyearsago.Thusitissometimesreferredtoasthe“theGiantPandaoftheRivers”
becauseofitsrarity.
FromthemiddleoflastcenturythepopulationoftheChinesepaddlefishhasdeclinedrapidly
duetooverfishing,habitatdegradationandpollution.
TheconstructionofGezhouDamin1981ontheYangtzeRiveralsocreatedabarrierto
themigratingfish,contributingtoitssharpdecline，saidWei.
MinistryofAgricultureandRuralAffairsofthePeoplesRepublicofChinaannounceda
10-yearfishingbanalongkeyareasoftheYangtzeRivertoprotectbiodiversityinthecountrys
longestwaterway.
Startingthisyear,thebanwillbeobservedacross332conservationareasintheYangtze
Riverbasin.Thebanneedstobestrictlyenforcedtoprotecttheremainingbiodiversityofthe
YangtzeRiver.
