Likemostkidstheirage,they’renotconcernedaboutthesignificanceofthelanguagethey’relearning.Still,theyhaveaweightyresponsibility:toreceivethetorch(火炬)andensurethesecurityof‘?leloHawai’iforfuturegenerations.

Itwasonly50yearsagothatthelanguagewasontheedgeofextinction.Thoughthesituationismuchimproved,inmanyways‘?leloHawai’iisstillonlifesupport.Teacherssaythere’sahugeenthusiasmforschoolkidstolearnthelanguage,butastheygrowup,they’reencouragedtofocuson“moreuseful”subjectsanduseEnglish,whicharebelievedtoassisttheminachievingsuccessintheirwork.In2016,therewere18,610Hawaiianspeakersontheislands.

“Onehundredthousandistheapproximatenumberofspeakersneededtoconsiderthelanguagesafe,”saysSolomon,professorofHawaiianlanguageatUniversityofHawai’iatManoa.“Theideaisthatthereareenoughpeoplepassingitontothenextgeneration,socializingtheirchildrentousethelanguageinalldomainsoflife,toexpressallthoughtsandneedsanddesires.”

Fortunately,thekidsofPu’?halaElementarywilltaketheresponsibilitytocontinuetheworkofthecurrentyoungadultsdefendingthelanguage,expandingaccessto‘?leloHawai’iinpartthroughTikTokandInstagram,andmakingthelanguageapracticalskillinadulthood.Theseyouth,alongwiththosecommittedtorecoveringthelanguagefrompreviousgenerations,sharetheirhopesforthebetter.
