thehistoryofChineseartsandcrafts.ltisjnitslongdevelopmentjnseparablefrom

silkworm-raisingzsilk-reelingandweaving.

Chinaisthefirstcountryintheworldthatdiscoveredtheuseofsilk.Silkworms

weredomesticatedasearlyas5yearsago.Theproductionofsilkthreadand

fabricsgaverisetotheartofembroidery.

AccordingtotheclassicalShangshuorBookofHistory,theregulationson

costumeof4yearsagostipulated（规定）amongotherthingsdressesand

skirtswithdesignsandembroideries77.Thisisevidencethatembroideryhad

becomeanestablishedartbythatremotetime.In1958zapieceofsilkwasfoundin

atombofthestateofChuoftheWarringStatesPeriod（475BC一221BQ.Itis

embroideredwithadragon-and-phoenixdesign.Morethan2yearsoldjtisthe

earliestpieceofChineseembroideryeverunearthed.Theartbecamewidespread

duringtheHanDynasty（22BC一22AD）.

Today,silkembroideryispractisednearlyalloverChina.ltisgenerallyagreed

thatthebestcommercialproductscomefromfourprovinces:Jiangsu（notably

Suzhou）,Hunan,SichuanandGuangdongzeachwithitsdistinctive

features.Embroideredworkshavebecomehighlycomplexandexquisite（精美白勺）

today.Takethedouble-faceembroideryCat/epresentativeworkofSuzhou

embroideryzforexample.Anartistsplitsthehair-thincolouredsilkthreadinto

filaments（仑田丝）—half,quarter,1/12oreven1/48ofitsoriginalthickness—anduses

theseinembroideringzconcealingthethousandsofendsandjointsintheprocess

andmakingthemdisappearasifbymagic.Thefinishedworkisacuteand

mischievous-lookingcatonbothsidesofthegroundwork.Themostdifficultpart

ofthejobistheeyesofthecat.Togivethemlustre
