Itwasaroughweek.Thepriceofoilskyrocketedasthetemperaturedroppedsharplyin
Maine.Wewerelookingatahighofeightdegreesthatweek,andIhadmissedthreedaysofwork
somypaycheckwasgoingtobelowerthannormal.Iwasstressed,tosaytheleast.Ishopped
strategically,lookingforeverypossiblewaytocutpenniessoIcouldbuygroceriesandkeepthe
housewarm.
Myeight-year-oldsondidntunderstandwhenItoldhimwewerestrugglingthatweek.He

thekindofyoghurtwithacartoonkidridingaskateboardonthefrontofthebox,andameretwo
spoonfulsineachcup.Itwasthekindofproductthatwastesaparentsmoneyandmakesmehate
advertising.
Ifeltguiltyasaparentwhenthosebigeyeslookedatmewithconfusion,asiftosay,“Its
justyoghurt.Whatsthebigdeal?”SoIfoundaway.Iputsomethingbackassinglemothersoften
do.Hegothisyoghurt.
Onthewaydrivingbackfromthegrocerystore,Inoticedahomelessmanholdingasignby
thesideoftheroad.Myhearthurt,andItriednottolookathim.Iwatchedpeoplestayawayfrom
