（2024·四川省成都市新都一中高二期末）Itwaslate,about10:15p.m.,whenJaniceEspositoarrivedattheBellport,NewYork,trainstation.Shejumpedintohercar,andbeganthe20-minutedrivehome.Havingtraveledtheroutesomanytimes,shepracticallydroveonautopilot.Butsuddenly,outofnowhere,acarcrashedintoEsposito’sminivan,pushingherbackwardontotherailroadtracks.Shesatintheminivan,totallyshockedbytheimpactandbythevehicle’sairbags.

Asithappens,PeteDiPintowasgettingreadyforbedwhenheheardthehigh-pitchednoiseofthecrash.Avolunteerfirefighterandretiredteacher,DiPinto,neverstoppedtothink.Heranoutthedoor,stillcladinhispyjamas.

Thefirstcarhecameupon,2,000feetfromhisfrontyard,wastheonethathadhitEsposito.OnceDiPintoconcludedthedriverwasOK,helookedaroundandspottedEsposito’sminivanlyingontherailroadtracks.Andthenheheardanunpleasantsound:thebellssignalinganoncomingtrain.
