Whentoday’shigh-schoolseniorsareaskedwhattheyplantodoaftergraduates,mostsaythat
theyintendtogetabachelor’sdegree.Theyhavebeentoldthattheirgenerationhasonly“one
waytowin”-bygettingatleastatleastabachelor’sdegree,inthehopethatitwilleventuallylead
toaprofessionaljob.
Inarecentsurveyofhigh-schoolseniorsconductedbytheNationCenterforEducationStatistics,
85percentoftherespondentssaidtheyplannedtogetabachelor’sdegree.And,although20
yearsagoonly45percentofhigh-schoolgraduateswentontocollege,today68percentactually
matriculate(注册),withthemajorityenrollinginfour-yearortwo-yearprogramsdesignedto
allowthemtransfertofour-yearinstitutions.
Accordingtoconventionalwisdom,therapidriseinthenumberofstudentsattendingcollege
iscausefornationalcelebration.Butourresearchsuggeststhat,intenditmaybecausefor
nationalconcern.Why?Becauseformanyyoungpeople,the“onewaytowin”paradigm(例子)is
notrealistic,giventheiracademictalentsandthelabor-marketprojections.Studentsranking
belowthetopthirdoftheirhigh-schoolgraduatingclasstoooftenfailtoearnasbachelor’sdegree
iftheyenrollincollege.Thecostofsuchfailure–inbothdollarsandunmetexpectations-isrising
andbeginningtoerodepublicconfidenceinoursystemofhigheducation.
