Abstract

JacksonandMarsh(1995)reportedthedevelopmentofaFlowStateScale(FSS)for

useinsportandphysicalactivity.TheFSScontains36itemsmeasuringthenine

dimensionsofflowdescribedbyCsikszentmihalyi(1990,1993).JacksonandMarsh

reportedhighinternalconsistencyestimatesforthesubscalesandevidencefornine

first-orderfactorsandonesecond-orderfactorwhenconfirmatoryfactoranalytic

techniqueswereused.Thepresentstudyextendedthisvalidationworkbysubjecting

thedatafromtheoriginalsample(N=394)ofeliteyoungerathletesandasubsequent

sample(N=398)ofolderathletestoRaschanalysis.TheseRaschanalysesshowed

quiteclearlythattheflowdimensionsmaybeconceptualisedasacontinuumwith

“autotelicexperience”beingexperiencedmorereadilythandimensionssuchas

“transformationoftime”,astatethatmayonlybeencounteredattheheightofadeep

flowexperience.TheRaschanalysesprovideusefuladditionalinformationaboutthe

areasoftheflowcontinuumtappedbytheitemsandscalesoftheFSSand,inso

doing,helptoconfirmtheconstructvalidityandgeneralisabilityofthescaleitself.
