TheSaltonSeainCaliforniaisactuallyasaltyinlandlake.Thelevelof
saltinthelakeswater—whatscientistscallitssalinity—hasbeenincreasing
steadilyforyearsbecausethelakeswaterisevaporatingfasterthanitis
beingreplacedbyrainfallorrivers.Ifthetrendcontinues,thelakeswater
willsoonbecomesosaltythatthelakewillbeunabletosupportfishandbird
populations.Thelakewouldthenbecomeessentiallyadeadzone.Fortunately,
thereareseveralwaystoreversethetrendthatisthreateningthelakes
health.
Oneoptionisdirectremovalofsaltfromthelakeswaterinspecial
desalinationfacilities.Waterfromthelakewouldbepumpedintothefacilities
andheated.Thiswouldcausethewatertoevaporateintosteam,whilesaltand
othermaterialsdissolvedinthewaterwouldbeleftbehind.Thesteamwould
thenbecooleddownandreturnedtothelakeassalt-freewater.Gradually,the
highsaltlevelswouldbereducedandthelake’soverallhealthwouldbe
restored.
Anotherpossiblesolutionistodilutethesaltlevelinthelakewith
waterfromtheocean.SincewaterinthePacificOceanis20percentlesssalty
thanwaterinthelake,bringingoceanwaterintothelakewoulddecreasethe
lake’ssalinity.Theoceanwatercouldbedeliveredthroughpipelinesor
canals.
