Thefollowingtechnicalnotewillassistwithidentificationofthetypeandcharacteristicsofapermanentmagnetmotor

selectedtobepairedwiththe580seriesdrive.Itaddresseshowtodistinguishbetweenaninternallymounted

permanentmagnetmotors(IPM)andsurfacemountedpermanentmagnetmotor(SMPM)andcommissioning

considerationsforthesemotortechnologieswithanACH580drive.Bothpermanentmagnetmotortechnologies

requireadrivetorunthemotor.ThistechnicalnotedoesnotapplytotheABBcoolingtowerdirectdrive,thatis

packagedwiththeACS880+N5350ortheABB“ECTitanium”,whichisanIPMmotor.Webeginwithageneraloverviewof

themotortechnologyandthedifferencesindesignbetweenthem.Thesedesigndifferencescanleadtodifferentmotor

controlconsiderationswhencommissioning.Conceptsfromthistechnicalnotecanalsobeusedforretrofitjobs.Itis

recommendedthattheentiretechnicalnotebereviewedbeforecommencingwithanyretrofitproject.Thistechnical

noteiswrittenforsomeonewithexperienceinworkingwithVFDsandmotorsinapplications.

technologiesistheplacementofthepermanentmagnetsrelatedtotherotorsofthemotor.
