Abstract
Fintechstartupshavesetouttorevolutionizethefinancialworld.However,littleisknownabout
howsuccessfulandinnovativethesefirmsactuallyare.Thispaperinvestigatesfirmfailure,
fundingsuccess,andinnovationcapacityusingahand-collecteddatasetof892Germanfintechs
foundedbetween2000and2021.Wefindthatfounderswithabusinessdegreeandentrepreneurial
experiencehaveabetterchanceofobtainingfunding,whilefounderteamswithscience,
technology,engineering,ormathematicsbackgroundsfilemorepatents.Early
