LighttheCitiesoftheFuture

ThepreviouslyunlitcyclepathintheNetherlandshasrecentlydrawnourattention.Ithasbeenresurfacedwithamaterialthatconsistsofshiningstonesinordertocreateawell-litroute.TheVanGoghpath,socalledaftertheartistwholivedinthetownofNuenenin1883,combinesthetraditionalwiththecontemporaryinagesturethatacknowledgeVanGogh’smasterpiece.TheStarryNight,butalsoshowsthewayaheadforcitylighting.TheVanGoghpathisnotasinglecase:it’snotdifficulttoforeseeatimewhennaturalmaterialscouldhelplightthecitiesofthefuture.

Whyshouldwecareaboutcitylighting?What’swrongwithcurrentelectricallightinganyway?Well,theproblemthatitcausesistwo-fold.First,ofcourse,electricityinmostcitiescomefromnon-renewableresources.AccordingtotheInternationalEnergyAgency,almost20%ofglobalelectricityisconsumedforlighting,whichisresponsibleforhighlevelsofcaremissions.Butthere’salsothebeliefthatelectriclightitselfisaformofpollutionbydestroyingourviewofnightsky.
