world’sfirstdocksidecontainercraneshownintheforeground.Concurrently,

Matsonalsodevelopedthedesignofthefirstshipbuilttobea“Container

Ship.”

Today’sspeakerwasfortunatetobeamemberoftheengineeringteamthat

developedthefirstdocksidecrane,andthefirstcontainership.

Now,cranesareoverthreetimeslargerinsizeandfivetimesgreaterin

weightthantheMatson-Pacecocrane.Shipsaremanytimeslargerthanthe

Matsonship,yetthevesseltimeatberthisless.Improveddesignsand

improvedoperationshavemadethispossible.

Moreimprovementsareneededtoresolvethecurrentcongestionproblems

weface.Furtherimprovementswillbenecessarytoavoidmoreserious

congestionproblemsinthefuture.
