purposesofeducation,thisappearsnarrowanddamaging,even,inthelongterm,tothe
economicgoodhealthofthecountry.Itispossibletoarguefortheultimatepurposesof
educationfromdifferentstandpoints.Theonethatappearstobethemotiveforceinmuch
educationaldecision-makingatthepresenttimevaluesknowledgethatisconduciveto
thefurtheranceofthenationaleconomicwell-being.Itseesthechildasabeingtobe
trainedtofitintothiseconomicmachine.Initiativeandactivityareencouragedonlyas
farasthesedovetailwithultimateoccupationaldestinations.Theteacher,therefore,is
seenasatrainer,aconstructor,atransmitter.However,therearemanywhovalue
knowledgewhichisperceivedaspartofthatcountrysculturalheritagewhileotherchild-
centredadvocates
