‘The’key2024electioninvolvingclimatechangeandthe

energytransition:BidenvsTrump2.0andthematterof

globaltrustintheUS

Overthepastdecade,theParis-basedInternationalEnergyAgency(IEA),underthelea-

dershipofFatihBirol,hasbecomeanimportantgeopoliticalactorinpromotingthe

energytransition.1‘Inthenearlynineyearssincehetookover,Birolhasledthe

agency’seffortstopublishaflurryofreportsandanalysesthatshowpolicymakers

wherecountriesareontheirdecarbonisationjourneysandhowtheycanaccelerate’,

accordingtorecentreportinginTimemagazine.2

However,astatementBirolmadeearlierthisyearleftsomeenergywatcherswonder-

ingifhemaybetoooptimisticaboutthetrajectoryofthetransition,particularlyifthe

presumptiveRepublicannomineeforUSpresidentDonaldTrumpwinselectionin

November2024.3WhenqueriedaboutwhatasecondTrumppresidencymightmean,

hesaid,‘Idon’texpectthepoliticalchangesofapresidentoraministeroranything

elsewillbeabletostopthecleanenergytransition.Theeconomicandtechnological

dynamicsareverystrong’,adding,‘Ibelievethecleanenergytransitionwillcontinue

tomovefast,whoeverthenextpresidentortheminister[of]thisorthatcountrywillbe’.4

ThiseditorialwillexplorewheretheUSistodayastheBidenadministrationheads

towardstheendofitsfirsttermandconsiderwhatasecondTrumppresidencymight

mean.
