ButonthatoccasiontheVenerableGirimānandawasafflicted,sufferingandgravelyill.Then
theVenerableĀnandawenttotheBlessedOneandafterpayinghomagetohimsatdownatone
side.Whenhehaddoneso,theVenerableĀnandasaidtotheBlessedOne.
“VenerableSir,theVenerableGirimānandaisafflicted,sufferingandgravelyill.Itwouldbe
good,VenerableSir,iftheBlessedOneweretogototheVenerableGirimānanda,outof
.”
“If,Ānanda,yougotothebhikkhuGirimānandaandtellhimthetencontemplations,itis
possiblethatthebhikkhuGirimānanda’safflictionmaybeimmediatelycured.
Whataretheten?
Theyarecontemplationofimpermanence,contemplationofno-self,contemplationof
foulness,contemplationofdanger,contemplationofabandoning,contemplationoffading
away,contemplationofcessation,contemplationofdisenchantmentwiththewholeworld,
contemplationofimpermanenceinallformations,mindfulnessofin-andout-breathing.
(i)Andwhat,Ānanda,iscontemplationofimpermanence?
Here,Ānanda,abhikkhu,gonetoortothefootofatree,ortoanemptyplace,
considersthus:Matterisimpermanent,feelingisimpermanent,perceptionisimpermanent,
formationsareimpermanent,consciousnessisimpermanent.Thushedwellscontemplating
impermanenceinthesefiveaggregatesasobjectsofclinging.This,Ānanda,iscalled
contemplationofimpermanence.
