Introduction

TherearetwomethodsofcomputingaresectionintheTrimbleAccess™software:theStandardmethodand

theHelmertmethod.Thefollowingsectionsoutlinetheformulaethatareusedintheseresection

computations.

NOTE–Inallthefollowingformulae,xorXvaluesrefertocoordinatevaluesontheeast-westaxisandyorY

valuesrefertocoordinatevaluesonthenorth-southaxis.

Standardresection

Calculationprinciple

Aninitialestimateoftheinstrumentstationpositioniscomputed.Observationequationsareformedforthe

observationstoeachcontrolpoint.

Theobservationstothecontrolpointsdonotneedtohaveanglesanddistancesobserved.Ifnodistances

aremeasuredthenangularobservationstoaminimumofthreecontrolpointsarerequired.

Amatrix-basedleastsquaresadjustmentiscarriedoutusingtheformedobservationequationsto

determinetheinstrumentstationcoordinates,orientationcorrection(Face1andFace2)andscale(ifnot

fixed).

Step1:InitialEstimateofInstrumentStationPosition

Theroutineswillcomputeanestimatedpositionfortheinstrumentstationusingeitheraclassicalthree

pointangularresectionorobservationstotwocontrolpointswithmeasureddistances,dependingonwhich

canbecomputedfirst.
