Introduction
AmongthevariousMRImethodsmeasuringcerebralbloodflow(CBF),Arterial
SpinLabeling(ASL)istheonlyonethatdoesnotrequireinjectionofany
exogenouscontrastagentortracer.Indeed,assuggestedinthenameofthe
technique,themeasurementofperfusionisobtainedbynon-invasivelabelingof
arterialbloodwaterspins(i.e.inversionorsaturation)proximaltothetissueof
interest.Theselabeledspinsarethenimagedatalatertimepointaftere
withthetissueization(1).Assuch,itcanberepeatedoveratimeperiod
ofafewsecondsorminutes,andhasawiderangeofapplicationsinthebrain,from
basicneurosciencetoappliedclinicalneurology,aswellasfortheassessmentof
organhomeostasisanywhereinthebody.
Inthislecture,thebasicprincipofASLwillbedescribed,andtheimportant
parametersdefiningthedifferentsequenceswillbeexined.ThemainMRI
acquisitionstrategies,togetherwiththeirmethodofquantificationwillalsobe
described,andfinally,thepotentialproblemsandartifactswillbeaddressed.
