    Tworoomsandacross-driftareminedinasaltformationatadepthofabout600mbelowthe

    groundsurface.Ahorizontalboreholeisdrilledinthepillarseparatingthetworooms.Thecreep

    closureofthisboreholeisdrivenbytheshearstressesinducedbytheexcavationprocess.Closure

    isestimatedinthisexampleusingtheWIPP-referencemodelforthesalt.Thesimulationcovers

    aperiodof7.7yearsandaccountsfortheinstantaneousmininganddrillingeventsattimezero.

    ThisexampleproblemisasimplifiedmodeloftheIntermediateScaleBoreholeTestperformedby

    SandiaNationalLaboratories(seeArgüello1991).

    7.2ModelingProcedure

    Theneperpendiculartotheboreholeaxisandlocatedhalfwayweentheroomsisaneof

    symmetryforthisproblem.Asystemofcoordinateaxesisselectedwithitsoriginonthesymmetry

    by3.66mhighandcutsthroughthemodel.Theboreholedrilledthroughthepillaris0.91min

    diameter,9.14mlong,andlocatedapproximately1.57mabovetheflooratthemid-lengthofthe

    room.
