Appraisalsystemsareoftenmisunderstoodandmismanaged.Appraisalsarecentralbothtohumanresource
managementandperformancemanagement.Understandingtheirrole,objectives,benefitsandpurposeis
importanttoallemployers.Carefulpreparationandunderstandingisrequirediftheappraisalprocessistobe
successful,worthwhileandrelevant.
Appraisalsystemsexisttoimproveorganisationalefficiencybyensuringthatindividualsperformtothebestof
theirability,developtheirpotential,andearnappropriatereward.Thisinturnleadstoimprovedorganisational
performance.
Appraisalshavethreemainpurposes.Theseareoftenmisunderstood.Thefirstistomeasuretheextenttowhich
anindividualmaybeawardedasalaryincreasecomparedwithhisorherpeers.Thisistherewardreview
component.
Thesecondpurposeofanappraisalistoidentifyanytrainingneedsand,ifappropriate,toprovidetrainingand
developmenttoenableanindividualtohelptheorganisationtoachieveitsobjectives.Thisistheperformance
reviewcomponent.Finally,appraisalsarealsoimportanttoaidanindividualscareerdevelopmentbyattempting
topredictworkthattheindividualmaybecapableofinthefuture.Thisisthepotentialreviewcomponent.
Employeesoftenquestionthevalueandusefulnessofthetimeandefforttakenupbyanappraisal.However,it
establisheskeyresultsthatanindividualneedstoachievewithinatimeperiodwhilealsocomparingthe
individualsperformanceagainstasetandestablishedstandard.
Theemployeeisnottheonlybeneficiary-theorganisationbenefitsthroughidentifyingemployeesfor
promotion,notingareasforindividualimprovement,andbyusingthesystemasabasisforhumanresource
nning.
