Importantnotice:Inordertoaccommodateagrowingnumberofstationsinthe

IntegratedSurfaceData(ISD),anewmethodologyfortheassignmentof

stationidentifiersisbeingimplementedbyapproximatelyJanuary2013.

Stationidentifierswhichcurrentlyappearasan11-digitnumericalfieldin

positions5–15ofeachISDrecordinthearchiveformatdescribedinthis

documentwillsoonincludestationsthatcontainanalphabeticcharacter(A–

Z)fortheleadingdigit(position5).Theseassignmentswillnotaffect

existingstationsunlessitbecomesnecessarytoreassignnewidentifiersto

them.Thisisoccasionallynecessaryduetostationmovesorvariousother

reasons.Itwillaffectmostnewstationscomingintoexistenceafterthis

implementationoccurs.Atsomepointinthefuture,NCEIwillbemoving

towardalongerstationidentifierforISD.Thiswillextendthecurrent

recordlayoutofthedatafilesandinfluenceallexistingstation

identifierswhichwillbereassigned.NCEIwillprovidefurtherinformation

onthesependingchangesasthedetailsareestablished.Youmayalsokeep

abreastoftheseorotherchangesbyreferringtothemostrecenteditionof

theISDdocumentation.
