CelesteSimone,amiddleschoolteacherwhousedtheAItoolstogeneratepicturesalongsidevocabularywordsandcreatedillustratedstorybooksthatusedstudents’namesascharacters,said,“I’mshockedtoseethattheycancreatethematerialsinamatterofseconds.Idon’tthinkIcouldgobacktothewayIdidthingsbefore.”

Thatremainstobeseen.Buttohelpthenation’s4millionteacherstousethetechnology,teachersunionshaveformedanunlikelypartnershipwiththeworld’slargesttechnologycompaniessuchasMicrosoft,OpenAIandAnthropic.Thetwogroupsdon’talwaysseeeyetoeyebutsaytheyshareacommongoal:trainingthefutureworkforceofAmerica.

“Likeitornot,AIispartofourworld,”saidDaaiyahBilal,anofficialofTheNationalEducationAssociation(NEA),thecountry’slargestteachersunion.“Wearepreparingkidsforthefuture.Thatisourprimaryjob.”

UnderthearrangementannouncedinJuly,NEAisplanningtobuildanAItrainingcenterinNewYorkCitythatwilloffervirtualandin-personworkshopsforteachers.Thegoalistoopenatleasttwomorecentersandtrain400,000teachersoverthenextfiveyears.

Techcompaniesalsoseeopportunitiesineducationbeyondtrainingteachers.Microsoftannounceda$4billioninitiativeforAIresearchandtraining.ItincludesaprogramthatwillgiveallschooldistrictsandcommunitycollegesinWashington,Microsoft’shomestate,freeaccesstoitsCoPilottools.Googlesaiditwouldcommit$1billionforAIeducationandjob
