Text Next, we’re on the road to Southern Oregond, where Ricki Stevenson found you can hike through giant forests, raft in one of America’s deepest lakes or view Shakespeare in the park. It’s Pristine wilderness, quiet and serene. Southern Oregond is one of America’s last and largest undeveloped regions. While over-logging could threaten this natural wonderland, don’t stay away because of it. Despite the timber industry’s long history and controversial practices here in Southern Oregond, there’s still plenty of pristine wilderness, forests, and rivers for those of us who love the outdoors to enjoy. Southern Oregond is easy to get to. Half way between Portland to the North and Sacramento, California, to the South. It’s about five hours from either. The region is a nature-lover dream. Mountain and forest offer unlimited opportunities for hiking and biking. The varied moods of the rogue river draw rafting enthusiasts who, between whitewater encounters, usually float in awe of the river’s natural beauty. And it’s a centre of culture as well. Nestled in the hills of Oregond, you may be surprised to find a little bit of Elizabethan England. This is the scene in Ashland, Oregond, about an hour before show time at the home of the Oregond Shakespeare Festival. Musicians and singers are warming up the audience outside America’s oldest Elizabethan theatre. “All the world is a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” When Shakespeare wrote these words in 1599, there was no way he could predict that centuries later, some of the world’s finest actors would tread this stage in a small Oregond town or that people from around the world would come here to see his works performed.
