During the Depression in 1933, protectionism was one of the factors of triggering the Second World War. In light of the tough trade situation, with the support of IMF and IBRD (referring the World Bank), GATT was signed in 1947 and officially came into effect in 1948 and the countries to sign the GATT consisted of 23 countries. GATT was amended and set up WTO in 1994. In the following year, the 75 signatories together with EU joined WTO. Up to now, the number of members of WTO is 153, which is divided into 4 parts, members, observers, accessions and GATT signatories. That’s all, thanks for your attention! With the effort of more ten years, China eventually join WTO in 2001, which embodies both opportunities and challenges.
