It usually takes up to 80% of the whole paper. Developing by comparison and contrast Comparison and contrast together are very often the best way to convey a new idea to the audience, relating the new idea to something the audience is already familiar with and then explaining how it is different from that more familiar concept. (Qiu,p15-3.3) Developing by illustration An illustration is a narrative example, exemplifying the idea that the writer tries to express. An illustration should have concrete details, all of which support the main idea. Developing by definition When developing an idea by definition, one should avoid dictionary definition because this sort of thing is predictable.
