IntroductionThe development in science and transportation, the globalization of economy, the progress of information technology all contribute to the rise of cross-cultural communication. People of the modern society feel the need and urge to communicate with people from other cultures and these developments give them the opportunity to do so. But the cultural difference causes great difficulty for them to successfully communicate with each other.Cross-cultural communication refers to a communication between people from different cultures. With the rapid development of the world economy and frequent contacts between different nations, cross-cultural communication is getting more and more important. This requires a smooth and convenient communication. But the fact is that various difficulties and linguistic barrier exist in our daily communication. Pragmatic failure is one of the main sources that rise to cross-cultural communication breakdown that causes ill feelings between native English speakers and Chinese speakers of English. Pragmatic failure mainly stem from cultural differences.?The notion of pragmatic failure is first proposed by Jenny Thomas. In his article cross-cultural communication, published on Applied Linguistics in 1983. Pragmatic failure is the cause of many communication breakdowns. There have been many papers and researches on pragmatic failure by Chinese linguists since the 1980s, but many of the studies made about pragmatic failures are from the perspective of English learning. No effort was made to discuss pragmatic failures in cross-cultural communication from a pragmatic point of view. This paper aims to make a tentative study of pragmatic failures and analyze the causes of the pragmatic failure in cross-cultural communication, and then try to find out some strategies to improve students’ pragmatic competence.II.
