The Importance of Oral English TeachingWith the development of middle school English teaching, there is an increasing tendency that more and more middle schools have offered or are going to offer the oral English course for those students who show competence in listening, reading and writing. Nowadays Chinese middle school’ English teaching is reaching a new stage at which oral English teaching plays an important role, and facing a new and unprecedented challenge. As everyone knows, generally speaking, there are two main reasons for us to improve our oral English: Firstly, because of the development of economy and the communication among different countries, oral English becomes more and more important; secondly, learning a language is to communicate with others, which means the final goal of learning a language is to speak it freely. Therefore, we can see the importance and urgency of oral English teaching. The famous linguist Hymes also says?“the finally aim of language teaching is to bring up our capacity of communication”. 1 There has been evidence in TESOL(Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Language) research that students’ communicative ability can not be learned simply by means of reading materials and studying grammar.Listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating are the?“five basic skills” of learning a language. And the final goal of learning a language is to master the five skills. But in china, generally speaking, the second section?–speaking is the weakest part in English studying, and also a serious problem for middle school students.
