IntroductionErnest Hemingway?(1899-1961), an American novelist and short-story writer, is one of the most famous American writers of the twentieth century. In China, Hemingway is one of the most popular western writers. He and his works have been introduced into China early and discussed heatedly in the past two decades. As much as for his writing, he is known for his adventurous personality and love of outdoor games. He is a fisherman and hunter, a firsthand witness of many wars, and a bullfighting aficionado. He was born in 1899 in Oak Park, Illinois, where he was raised. He spent his childhood in the woods of Michigan, where his family owned a summer home. After graduating from high school in 1917, where he had contributed a weekly column to the school newspaper and contributed fiction to the school’s magazine, he went to work for the Kansas City Star. Many attribute his terse writing style to his experience as a journalist. Hemingway was an ambulance driver in Italy during World War I and received bullet wound.Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1954. He was noted both for the intense masculinity of his writing and for his adventurous and widely publicized life. Hemingway first published The Old Man and the Sea in 1952, which is gotten the Nobel Prize in literature for his narrative art. The Old Man and the Sea is the story of an epic struggle between an old, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. For eighty-four days, Santiago, an aged Cuban fisherman, has set out to sea and returned empty–handed.
