It scans the spectrum sequentially from 4 to 256 AMU. Fitted with a prescaling detector it can measure samples over a wide range of concentrations from ppm to ppt. System overview The mass spectrometer system consists of three basic functional systems: Ion optics Mass analyser Detector The are all contained within a tri-vacuum chamber differentially pumped system. System overview The mass analyser system is contained within the vacuum housing and the interface and transfers ions generated in the plasma at atmospheric pressure into the mass analyser operating under a high vacuum. The vacuum housing The vacuum housing is an extruded aluminium block, it contains: - the mass analyser and detector - and the hardware to mount the diluter and discriminator PWB’s Mass analyser assembly The mass analyser assembly is only accessible via the rear of the instrument. It contains the: Quadrupole filter assembly Fringe filter assembly Entrance plate Entrance lens Exit lens Detector The detector is mounted on the inside of the vacuum housing lid. The diluter and discriminator PWB’s are mounted to the outside of the lid. This complete assembly must be removed from the vacuum housing before the mass analyser can be fitted or removed. The three detector HV supplies pass from the dilutor PWB to the detector via high vacuum feedthrough’s fitted to the vacuum chamber lid.
