General Aspects High requirements for plate quality have led to new developments in the design and operation of levellers which have to ensure a broad levelling range, high plate flatness and minimum internal residual stresses. The leveller concepts have been influenced by new market requirements, such as thermomechanically rolled and/or intensively cooled high strength steels with low levelling temperatures, high strength steel qualities produced, for example, by quenching and tempering or wedge plates with variable thickness over the length. The demands of the plate-processing industry on the dimensional and shape accuracy of rolled plates are constantly increasing. Among other things, customers require the plate to be straight and flat as well as free from any internal stresses which might prejudice the application.
