Influence of annealing treatment on the fracture toughness of Y2O3-partially stabilized zirconia. ABSTRACT Microhardness indents are made between room temperature and 1000 oC in the crystals of Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2, as-received and after annealing for 150 hours at 1600 oC to develop the tetragonal precipitate microstructure. The hardness decreases significantly over this temperature range, whereas the annealed crystals were slightly softer at all temperatures. In contrast, the toughness decreased only modestly, and is always significantly greater in the annealed crystals, due to transformation toughening. The apparent brittle-ductile transition temperature, above which cracking did not accompany indentation, is estimated to be 600 oC for the as-received material. 1. INTRODUCTION Zirconia alloys were of increasing interest since the discovery of transformation toughening in partially stabilized ZrO2 (PSZ). The increased strength and toughness due to the stress-induced martensitic transformation of tetragonal ZrO2 to monoclinic was extensively studied in Y2O3 and MgO stabilized ZrO2 [1-4]. Of particular interest are the Y2O3-ZrO2 alloys, that show very interesting mechanical properties at high temperature [5] and in which the tetragonal particles can reach sizes of several microns without transforming spontaneously on cooling. Indentation studies are useful for studying some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of brittle solids due to their non-destructive nature and the small amount of a material
