Course assessment exercise #1: Writing a short paper Objective: To put into practice the ideas discussed during the lectures, by writing up a short experiment, using both the language and style of an archival scientific publication. The “quiz” in the class of Monday 27th provides the data for the experiment. The paper should be written as though part of an investigation into the factors determining English language skills in non-English speaking university students. I have provided some notes describing several background papers (references). You must mention all of these references at some point in the paper. The paper should be written using a format of Introduction-Methods-Results-Discussion-Conclusions-References. The paper must be written according to the style file provided. Such a requirement is common when submitting a publication to a conference in so-called “camera-ready form”. The paper must be no more than 2 pages in length. The paper must include: (i) a table of the results (included in this document), (ii) a figure showing the “North-South” classification map (included in this document), (iii) the word “respectively” – used correctly…! You should use sub-sections in the Results section to describe the results of each of the three parts of the quiz. The “overall” results can be described either in the Results section or in the Discussion section. The paper will be evaluated as follows: Overall organization of paper and avoidance of long sentences. 10 marks Use of verb tense 10 marks Agreement of verbs with sentence subject 10 marks Use of references 10 marks Use of articles (“a, an, the”) 10 marks Overall flow of language (use of connecting/linking words) 10 marks Adherence to the style guide (esp. page length!) 5 marks Use of correct scientific style 10 marks Description of the results 10 marks Interesting discussion (comparing the results to “previous work”) 5 marks (total = 90, plus 10 marks
