Unit 5 Air Filters, Pressure Regulators, and Lubricators The air compressor and the various components that are located near the compressor were discussed in a previous chapter. The compressor system may include, in addition to the compressor , an after-cooler , a safety valve , a water separator, and a receiver. The compressed air leaving the compressor system is the various devices for doing work; these devices may be air cylinders ,pneumatic motors, or pneumatic tools (Fig. 1).In a well-designed pneumatic system , the air must pass through an air filter, a pressure regulator, and a lubricator in the line, before it is delivered to the device or machine that performs the work . It is sometimes recommended that not more than two tools be served by a single filter, regulator, or lubricator, In this chapter, the functions ,and maintenance of the three components:(1)air filter; (2)pressure regulator; and (3)lubricator are discussed .All three components are necessary for efficient operation of pneumatic systems ,and it is important that they should be installed and maintained properly. GENERAL FEATURES Some of the general operating features should be pointed out . Several different work devices or air tools may be connected to a single compressor, which may be located at a distance from the tools. There may be periods of time when no air is required from the compressor .The distribution piping may be warm during some periods of time and cold at other intervals .It is almost impossible to keep the air distribution piping free from dirt, moisture or condensate, pipe compound ,pipe scale , emulsified and deteriorated compressor oil, and rust. Moisture in the air may condense, which enables rust to form, and pipe scale may peel. In different compressed-air plants, various amounts of impurities may be found in the air distribution lines , Foreign matter in the compressed air can do real damage , causing a system to become inoperative.
