It is precious as a means of payment, in the form of jewellery, or as a chemically stable material in high technology. Except for native gold deposits, the element occurs only in trace and ultratrace concentrations as a structural constituent in other minerals. This poses the problem of its quantitative determination. Conventional graphite-furnace AAS can only quantify the total gold content of a sample. The present report shows that solid sampling graphite-furnace AAS (SS GS AAS) can provide basic information on the forms in which gold is bonded, e.g. in important minerals. Materials, instrumentation and methods For our investigations we synthetically prepared sulphidic minerals (galenite PbS, greenockite CdS, pyrite FeS , sphalerite ZnS), which were doped with gold in a 2 known concentration (between 0.5 and 10 mg/kg). For determining the gold concentration by spectral analysis, 15 or more idiomorphic crystals sized between 1 and 2 mm were selected.
