COURSE OUTLINETERTIARY STUDY SKILLSOutlineModule Name:Tertiary Study SkillsLevel:3Points:15Duration of course:11 weeks of 3 periods a week. Each period lasts approximately 85 minutes each.Prerequisites:NilModule PrescriptorThis module aims at preparing students for the demands of the tertiary environment in which they need to become effective self-directed learners. Students are introduced to the culture and practices of tertiary environments and learn to equip themselves with the necessary skills and tools.Content (see Student Programme/Assessment schedule)The Tertiary Study Skills course is mainly task based and this is supplemented by teacher-generated material in the form of notes placed on “Blackboard” for the unit on Use of Computer Technology and the tasks set for the research projects. Some materials are based in part on the text, The Study Skills Handbook (Cottrell, 2008).The module includes the following modular units: Study Skills: Learning styles and Time management Taking and making notesCoping with extended English [Note:Aspects of study skills related to Academic Writing, Academic Reading, Listening to Texts and Academic Vocabulary Development are covered in English 1 and English 2 and are thus not repeated in this module. A summary of the skills is attached (see English Language Modules and Integrated Study Skills: English 1 2).Approximately 50% of class time is devoted to the use of computer technology as a tool for studying.
