* Vertical Scan Rate Vertical Scan Rate or Refresh rate is the rate the image is re-drawn or “refreshed.” It is expressed in Hertz or cycles per second. The refresh rate affects the quality of the image you see. If the refresh rate is too slow, the image will appear to flicker. The rate at which a person can perceive flicker varies from person to person and is affected by brightness and other factors. Typical refresh rates range from 50-70 Hz. An image that flickers is somewhat annoying and can cause eyestrain if you look at a CRT computer screen for a long time. To reduce the likelihood of seeing flickering and to reduce eyestrain, refresh rates above 70 times a second are preferable. HORIZONTAL SCAN RATE The rate that each horizontal line is drawn is known as Horizontal Scan Rate and is expressed in kilohertz (KHz). If the Horizontal Scan Rate of a computer video signal is 31.5 KHz, this means that 31,500 horizontals lines are drawn every second. * The resolution and horizontal scan rate of a computer signal are set parameters that determine the bandwidth required of all equipment in the data display system. When the data display chain lacks sufficient bandwidth to pass the signal, the effects of are easily observed on the displayed image. The concept of bandwidth is like a highway with only a few lanes. If the number of lanes is increased, a greater number of cars can pass through at higher speeds in the same time period.
